Illustrating Children’s Books Course for Adults

The price for the course is £200 for 10 lessons.

You’ll need to pay £100 in advance to book your spot (there are only 8 places available), and this advance payment is refundable up to a month before the course starts. 

The remaining £100 is due at the beginning of the course.

The course is open to all levels, and I will strive to provide personalised attention to everyone. If you don’t have a story, you can choose one that you love and recreate the illustrations.

You have to bring your material, but I’ll bring mine too, to try and share.

This course promises to be fun and relaxed!

Children’s Craft Parties at The Green Shed

I ran 6 wonderful craft parties this weekend and the weather played a blinder so all the food was eaten outside. The children made the most beautiful bunting and lavender bags to take home and they all had great fun.

Vintage Fabric Scrap Packs

I’ve been collecting vintage fabric and gorgeous things since about 1994 when I was making my mini bunting for The Country Living Fair. Since then I had my own bricks and mortar shop and made hundreds of lavender hearts for Cath Kidston. My home and work have been featured in many magazines and also ‘Pretty Pastel Style’ book by Selena Lake. I live in Muswell Hill, North London and work from home. I have a studio called The Green Shed N10 where I do craft parties for children.

Anemones and an article in Prima Magazine.

birthday cake, stork, anenomies 014There’s an article about me in Prima magazine, the April edition which came out about 3 weeks ago. Mags are always weeks ahead of themselves it seems.

birthday cake, stork, anenomies 018It’s quite odd seeing what you’ve said written in print. A bit surreal. It was an article with three women, me being one of them, who had shops in their houses.

birthday cake, stork, anenomies 013Here’s a stork on the pond in the park where I take the dog. I think it’s a stork. I know that  to people who live in the countryside it’s no big deal but for me it really is something special. It was absolutely freezing on that day last week and it just stood there completely still. I see it quite often.

A lovely quiet day cutting out vintage fabric animals and shapes

It’s so therapeutic doing this and it’s a lovely way to use some of my fabric which isn’t suitable for other things.

I iron interfacing on the back so the shapes aren’t floppy ans are easy to hold. I’ve made little groups of different ones and put them on my Etsy Shop

Children love them as I saw from the fabric workshops I did a few weeks ago. They can be put on the wall,  glued into scrap books,  played with in make believe games……..

Make a picture to take home

they can be used for making cards or pictures with, you can decorate a mirror, a cupboard, the fridge, a window……..

the possibilities are endless and most of the fabrics are vintage so they are truly beautiful and original. A lovely little present for children to play with on these cold winter days.

Fabric workshops for children at my Open House & vintage Pop up Shop

First children gone and a quick tidy before the next ones arrive 

I cut out some shapes to give them ideas. As it turned out they didn’t need any ideas from me as they had plenty of their own

Even though small children don’t understand the concept of vintage fabric they do know subconsciously that it’s prettier and more special than some of the new fabric and that the results were magical.

I put some mini bunting around the fireplace and switched the fairy lights on.

The fairy cakes definitely helped with the creative processes.

Flower Pot Girls

The flower pot girls

It’s funny how you can go through a phase in your life of doing  something, then stop and then years later pick it up again. I used to make so many fabric pictures years and years ago. I sold them to shops at the Top Drawer trade fairs  and at The Country Living Fairs  both in London. That was about 15 years ago. There was no social media then and things were far simpler. I can’t remember why I stopped, I suppose it’s because I started making all sorts of other things but recently I’ve started longing to make them again, probably because of the children’s fabric workshops that I’m going to be doing at my next  Open House Sale  https://nickygrace.wordpress.com/.

I just need to arrange my space more effectively as it’s very crowded with piles of mini bunting and lavender bags at the moment.

When I started all those years ago, there was very little choice of pictures for children’s bedrooms. Now there’s lots and we’re spoilt for choice but I still think it’s nice to make our own stuff too. The pig and horse above I cut from my baby’s old T shirts which I used to buy from a wonderful children’s second hand clothes and toy shop on the Archway Road a mile away. It’s sadly no longer there.

I’m going to start making pictures again.  At least that’s the plan.

Fabric workshops for children at my Open House Sale on Sat 27th & Sun 28th October 2012

My living room will be transformed into a lovely fabric workshop with a long table and chairs.  About eight children will be able to sit round at a time. I and a friend or two will be on hand all the time to help them make pictures, mini bunting, or a lavender bag.

Below are a few photos of pictures that I made years ago.  Since then I’ve made lots of other things but I’ve always wanted to go back to making pictures as I love it so much.

I will pre cut some of the shapes from all sorts of fabric,  some of it vintage.  I’ve been collecting fabric for a very long time so have lots to choose from. Children will have a piece of card and I’ll help them choose what they want to do and they can do the gluing if they like or I can do it if they prefer.

If they like, instead of making a picture they can make 2 meters of bunting. I’ll help them to choose the fabric they like and I or a friend will  sew it on the sewing machine. I’ll have two friends there who are both professional  machinists.

Children can come anytime between 11am and 5 pm can stay for up to an hour. biscuits will be provided and hopefully they’ll have great fun. They can bring friends or siblings and if they come on their own we shall do our best to ensure that they feel welcome and at home.  We are all   mothers and being with children comes very naturally.

Another option available will be custom made sleeping bags. Your child should bring his or her doll or teddy (or ducky, monkey ….) and we will help choose the fabrics of choice to make a lovely little sleeping bag for it.

I’ll be making mini fabric bunting with children too which they can take home with them.

I’ll have lots of fabric to choose from including bits of vintage.

Parents can stay in the room if they like or wander around and see the array of amazing and unique things on offer including handmade ceramics, vintage fabric lavender bags, floral jugs, cushions, cards, bunting and more.  There will be home made cake and you can wander round the garden if you like.

Cost per child will be £6 each.

I have public liability insurance and am CRB checked.

My kitchen table at the Pop up Shop

I took this photo at my Pop up Shop in July. It was hard to ‘style’ it nicely because there is so much and because the lavender hearts are in cellophane bags and they slip and slide all over the place so I just plonked it attractively  on the table and hoped for the best.  There is a selection of all of these at my  on line shop
